Running Mini Sessions With Confidence: A Guide for Photographers

Aug 27 2026 | By: Kate DeCoste Photography

Here's what I tell every photographer who asks me about mini sessions: the sessions themselves are the easy part. It's everything around them, planning, pricing, marketing, and knowing what to do when a client sits down in front of you, that actually trips people up.

I've spent years figuring this out through trial and error. This fall, I wanted to start sharing more of what I've learned, not just through client sessions, but for other photographers who are building their own businesses.

Why I'm Doing This

I love shooting. I also love teaching. Mentoring other photographers has become one of the most meaningful parts of my business, and this fall, I'm leaning into that more than ever, through the podcast, through resources like this one, and through 1:1 calls for photographers who want to go deeper.

Mini sessions are the perfect place to start, because they're one of the fastest ways to bring in new clients, but only if you approach them with a real plan instead of just winging it.

Mini Session Success Guide:

The first resource I'm sharing is a $9 guide built specifically for mini session season. Inside, you'll find:

  • A simple pricing calculator that walks you through your actual costs and builds your price from there, not a guess
  • Real mini session examples, so you can see the math in action
  • A customizable guide you can hand straight to your own clients

Because if there's one thing that trips up almost every photographer I talk to, it's pricing. Charge too little, and you're overbooked and underpaid. Charge too much, and you're second-guessing every number before you even hit send on the invoice.

Plus a Bonus

I also included a conversation from my podcast with Andrew Hellmich, host of PhotoBizX and someone who's spent over 20 years in this industry. We talk about pricing, profit margins, and the mindset shift that separates a business owner from a photographer who's just spinning their wheels.

One line from that conversation has stuck with me ever since we recorded it:

"You're not too expensive. You just haven't told the story of your value yet."

If you've ever hesitated before sending a quote, that one's for you.

Listen to that episode here!

Want to Go Deeper?

If you finish the guide and want to talk through your specific pricing, a tricky client situation, or your mini session plan start to finish, I offer 1:1 mentor calls too. Guide buyers get a discount code inside.

This is just the beginning of what I'll be sharing this fall. If you're a photographer figuring out your own path, I'd love for you to follow along.
