Brinley's Lincoln Senior Session | Haymarket, Pioneers Park & Golden Hour on the Hill
Somewhere between an outfit change and a bouquet of purple flowers, Brinley pulled out a copy of "The First Day of Kindergarten." She's headed to college for elementary education after graduation, and that one small prop ended up telling more of her story than any location could.
She's a senior at Lincoln Standing Bear High School, and we built her session around two very different sides of her city: the brick and energy of downtown Haymarket, and the open green space and golden light of Pioneers Park. Every outfit and every stop gave us something new, while still feeling like her.
Fun fact: this wasn't the first time I've photographed this family. I've had the chance to photograph Brinley's cousins too, and there's something special about watching a family grow up in front of my camera over the years.
Starting Downtown in the Haymarket
We kicked things off in the evening in the Haymarket, timing the whole session so we'd land at Pioneers Park right as golden hour hit. Brinley brought some of her strongest looks of the day here: skirts, heels, and a cute off-the-shoulder top that let her personality lead without overpowering the shot. The brick, the alleyways, the little pops of color around downtown all gave us a completely different feel from the rest of the session.
Here's the part that kept us on our toes: the temperatures had finally dropped after weeks of heat, so we jumped on the chance to shoot. The catch was Nebraska wind. We fought it the entire day, ducking into covered spots and timing our shots between gusts, but we made it work and came away with images I love just as much as if the wind had never shown up at all. Brinley's mom was right there through all of it, helping smooth her hair back into place between gusts and reassuring her it still looked great. Having two sets of hands and two people telling her she looked amazing made those windy moments a lot less stressful than they could have been.
Senior year has a lot of sides to it, and so does a Nebraska summer. You learn to work with what you're given, not around it.
An Afternoon at Pioneers Park
From there we headed to Pioneers Park for the rest of the session, where Brinley changed into a lacey white crop top and jeans, holding a bouquet of purple flowers that she and her sister put together themselves. That detail alone made the whole set feel personal in a way a store-bought bouquet never could.
She also wore a soft white flowy dress, and later a short slip dress with pink flowers paired with white boots. For that one, we shot straight in the sun on purpose. It gave us a dramatic, high contrast look and, just as importantly, kept us out of the wind for a few minutes.
Golden Hour on the Hill
We closed out the day exactly where we planned, on one of Pioneers Park's most popular hills, right as golden hour hit. Brinley wore a white two piece: a long skirt with blue flowers and a spaghetti strap top. The sunset lit everything up behind her, and we weren't the only ones there for it. About six other seniors and their photographers had the same idea, all of us working in that same glow as the sun went down.
Getting that shot took a little teamwork. The wind was still working against us, strong enough that my light stand wouldn't have stayed upright on its own. Brinley's mom stepped in and held it steady the entire time, which meant I could actually light Brinley properly and still catch that sunset behind her. Without her, we wouldn't have gotten that image at all.
There's something I love about that. Senior year isn't a solo experience, and for one evening, that hillside was full of people all marking the same milestone in their own way.
It's About More Than Pretty Locations
People often assume choosing locations is the biggest part of planning senior pictures.
I actually think it's one of the last decisions we make.
Before we ever talk about the Haymarket, Pioneers Park, or anywhere else, I want to learn about you. What do you love? What makes you feel confident? What parts of your personality do you want to remember years from now?
For Brinley, that book wasn't just a prop. It's the whole reason the rest of the session mattered, tying her future back to where it started, tucked into a few frames alongside heels, golden hour, and a bouquet she made with her sister.
Once we answer those questions, the locations usually become obvious. They're simply the backdrop. Your story is the whole point.
Brinley put it best herself. After I commented on one of her early #seniorsunday posts on Instagram, she wrote back:
"Kate, I couldn't be happier with how they turned out."
