Why Credibility Beats Followers on Social Media (According to a Former NBC Reporter)

Everyone wants more followers.

Almost nobody talks about what those followers actually mean.

That's the distinction Katie Love has built a multi seven-figure agency around. Before she was helping founders turn content into credibility and credibility into revenue, she spent nearly a decade as an NBC News reporter, covering presidential elections and high-profile trials. She brought that same instinct for what makes a story land straight into the world of social media, and now leads Love Social Media, a women-led agency recently named to Inc's Best Places to Work.

The big takeaway: followers are a vanity number. Credibility is what actually gets you hired.

Katie's point is simple but easy to lose sight of: when someone lands on your profile, they're not counting followers, they're deciding whether to trust you. That means your bio, your pinned posts, and your story highlights aren't just profile housekeeping. They're the fastest way someone decides who you are and whether you're worth working with.

Why "Unpolished" Builds Trust Faster Than Perfect

Katie's first business investment was $800 on brand photos money she didn't really have yet. It worked, but not because the photos were flawless. It worked because they gave her a consistent, recognizable identity (right down to the pink she's still known for a decade later).

But polish only gets you halfway. Katie's clients who grow fastest are the ones willing to show up unedited, talking to camera, sharing what a shoot actually took, admitting what went wrong. That's what turns a portfolio into a relationship.

The Content Mistake She Sees Constantly

For photographers especially, Katie says the biggest mistake is simple: making content for yourself instead of for the person you want to book. A gorgeous photo proves your work. It doesn't always give someone a reason to save it, share it, or come back.

I'll admit, this one stung a little. I think most of us have posted something because we loved it, not because it actually served the person scrolling past.

Where Photographers Should Actually Be Spending Their Time

If you've only got an hour a week, Katie's advice is refreshingly unglamorous: post twice, consistently, at the same time. One post should be proof of your work. The other should be personality even something as low-lift as six seconds of behind-the-scenes B-roll with a caption that says something true, not just "shooting my client today."

We also got into two platforms most photographers underuse - Pinterest and YouTube and why AI is best treated as a thought partner, never the final voice on your content.

Zoom out far enough, and the thread through this whole conversation is the same one Katie's built her whole career on: people don't follow brands. They follow people they trust. Everything else is strategy in service of that.

Happy listening,
Kate
