What to Wear for Your Nebraska Senior Pictures
One of the questions I get more than almost any other is:
"What should I wear for my senior pictures?"
And I get it — standing in front of your closet trying to plan outfits for one of the biggest photo sessions of your life feels like a lot of pressure.
So here's the first thing I tell every senior.
This isn't about finding the "perfect" outfit.
It's about finding the outfits that feel like you.
Because clothes aren't just what you're wearing in the photo. They're part of how you tell your story.
Start With How You Want to Feel
Before we talk about colors or trends or Pinterest boards, I like to ask a different question.
How do you want to feel during your session?
Confident? Comfortable? A little dressed up? Totally yourself in jeans and your favorite boots?
There's no wrong answer. The outfit that photographs best is almost always the one you forget you're wearing because you're too busy laughing, moving, and being you.
If you're uncomfortable, it shows. If you're comfortable, that shows too.
Think in Outfits, Not Just Clothes
How many outfits you'll want really depends on your session.
- Express Session — plan on one to two looks. Simple and polished is the goal here.
- Senior Signature Collection — you have unlimited looks within your session time, so bring options and we'll see how far we get.
- Luxe All-Inclusive — six or more looks, which gives us room to move through very different styles in one day.
- Legacy Experience — since this one spans four sessions across the year, your looks naturally spread out by season instead of all at once.
Whatever your session type, each outfit usually has a purpose. Something like:
- A casual, everyday outfit that feels like "you on a normal day"
- A slightly more polished look for a classic portrait
- Something tied to a hobby, sport, or activity that's shaped your senior year
You don't need five outfit changes to have a great session. You need a few that each say something different about who you are.
Let Your Personality Lead, Not the Trends
It's easy to scroll Instagram and think you need the outfit everyone else is wearing this year.
But trends fade. You won't.
Years from now, I want you to look back at your senior photos and see yourself, not just what was popular the summer before you graduated.
So instead of asking "what's trending," I like seniors to ask:
- What do I already reach for in my closet?
- What colors make me feel good?
- What's an outfit I'd wear on a great day, even if no camera was around?
That's usually where the best choices come from.
Take Alison. She wore a pink '90s-style tee with red lettering — a nod to her love of Diet Coke, paired with a bright green cardigan, baggy cut-off jeans, and layered chains.
Nobody told her that was the outfit. She just knew it was hers.
And it's exactly the kind of choice that makes a senior session feel like a real person instead of a template.
Coordinating Colors (Without Overthinking It)
If your session includes multiple people — family members, a partner, a group of friends — coordinating matters a little more. But "coordinating" doesn't mean matching.
A few simple ways to keep things cohesive:
- Pick a color palette, not a single color everyone has to wear
- Mix textures and patterns as long as the tones work together
- Stick to 2–3 main colors across the group, with neutrals to balance things out
For solo senior sessions, this matters less, but it's still worth thinking about how your outfit colors will look against the location we choose. Warm tones tend to glow in golden-hour light. Bold colors pop beautifully in urban settings. Soft neutrals blend into natural, outdoor spaces.
Layer for Movement and Options
Some of my favorite images happen when a senior is caught mid-laugh, mid-walk, or mid-motion. Clothing that moves well photographs well.
A few things I always suggest:
- Bring a jacket, flannel, or cardigan you can add or remove for a slightly different look
- Choose fabrics that move naturally instead of stiff, structured pieces
- Avoid anything that needs constant adjusting — you want to be thinking about you, not your outfit
Layers also give us built-in variety without needing to plan a full outfit change.
Let Your Hobbies Show Up in Your Wardrobe
If soccer, dance, farm life, music, or anything else has shaped your senior year, your wardrobe is a great place to let that show.
That could mean:
- Your jersey or team gear
- Boots and a flannel for a farm or acreage session
- A dance leotard or costume piece
- Whatever you'd actually wear to do the thing you love
These pieces aren't costumes. They're part of your story, and they usually end up being some of the most meaningful images from the whole session.

How many outfits should I plan?
It depends on your session type. Do outfits need to match the location?

Absolutely. Some of the most meaningful images come from seniors wearing their jersey, dance costume, work boots, or whatever connects to what they love.
What if I don't know what to wear?
That's completely normal. During your consultation, we'll go through your closet favorites, your personality, and your session locations together, so your outfits feel just as personal as everything else about your session.
Should everyone in a group session match?
No — coordinate, don't match. A shared color palette with some variety looks much more natural than everyone in the exact same thing.
