How to Choose the Perfect Location for Your Nebraska Senior Pictures
One of the first questions I ask every senior during our consultation isn't:
"Where do you want to take your senior pictures?"
Instead, I ask two simple questions.
Are you drawn to urban locations or nature?
And then…
Is there somewhere—or something—that just feels like you?
That's where the magic begins.
Because the best senior photos aren't taken at the most popular location. They're taken in places that tell your story.
Start with What You Love
When you're planning your senior session, it's easy to scroll Pinterest or Instagram and think you have to recreate someone else's photos.
But your senior session shouldn't look like everyone else's.
It should look like you.
Maybe you love the energy of downtown Lincoln with its brick streets, murals, and city vibe.
Maybe you'd rather wander through a flower farm surrounded by blooms or explore the peaceful paths of a local park.
Maybe you feel most at home on your family's acreage, at your horse barn, or standing on a soccer field.
There isn't a right answer.
There is only the place where you feel the most comfortable being yourself.
How Do I Choose the Right Location for My Senior Pictures?
During every consultation, I help seniors narrow down the perfect location by asking a few simple questions...Before we ever choose a location, I like to get to know you.
Some of the questions I ask include:
- Are you drawn to urban locations or nature?
- What places make you happiest?
- What hobbies or activities have shaped your high school years?
- Is there a favorite place you always go with friends or family?
- Is there somewhere that simply feels like home?
Those conversations almost always lead us to the perfect session.
Your Story Is Already Full of Great Locations
Sometimes seniors think they need to travel to the newest or trendiest spot.
The truth?
Some of my favorite sessions have happened in places that wouldn't make anyone else's "Top 10 Photo Locations" list.
One senior wanted photos at Runza because she absolutely loved it.
Was it a location I'd ever suggested before?
Not at all.
But those images became some of my favorites because they captured a genuine part of who she was during her senior year.
This year, I already have a couple of seniors who want to stop at the classic Dairy Queen in Lincoln.
I love that idea.
Years from now, those photos won't just remind them of what they looked like—they'll remind them of late-night ice cream runs, friendships, and a season of life they'll never get back.
That's what makes a location meaningful.
Your Hobbies Can Inspire Your Session
Sometimes the best location isn't really about the location at all.
It's about what you love.
If soccer has been your life for the past four years, let's head to the soccer field.
If dance has shaped your high school experience, let's photograph part of your session in the studio.
Love music? Bring your guitar or your flute.
Maybe photography is your passion.
Maybe it's books.
Maybe it's your Jeep.
Maybe it's your paddleboard.
Maybe it's showing livestock, riding horses, or spending weekends helping on the family farm.
These aren't just props.
They're pieces of your story.
Nature Doesn't Mean Just One Thing
When a senior tells me they want nature, I always ask another question.
"What kind of nature?"
Because every senior pictures something different.
Maybe it's:
- A flower farm filled with colorful blooms.
- A greenhouse surrounded by lush greenery.
- Tall prairie grass at sunset.
- A peaceful lake.
- A wooded trail.
- Open fields with Nebraska skies stretching for miles.
Nature has many personalities.
So do seniors.
Urban Doesn't Mean Just Downtown
Urban sessions can be just as personal.
Maybe it's downtown Lincoln.
Maybe it's colorful murals.
Maybe it's your favorite coffee shop.
Maybe it's an old Dairy Queen.
Maybe it's the bookstore where you spend Saturday afternoons.
Maybe it's your hometown's Main Street.
Urban locations become meaningful when they're connected to your life—not just because they're trendy.
Don't Overlook Your Hometown
It's easy to think you have to travel somewhere famous to have beautiful senior photos.
But some of my favorite sessions have happened in places that simply mattered.
A hometown park.
The family farm.
A gravel road you've driven hundreds of times.
A neighborhood where you grew up.
The football stadium where you've played for years.
Whether that's Lincoln, Wahoo, or another Nebraska community, meaningful locations always create stronger photographs than popular ones.
Some of the Best Sessions Mix Different Looks
One of my favorite ways to design a session is by combining two completely different environments.
Imagine...
Starting at a flower farm and ending downtown.
Beginning on the soccer field before changing into your favorite outfit for the city.
Exploring a greenhouse before heading to your favorite local ice cream stop.
Those combinations create variety while still telling one complete story—your story.
