The One About Building a Business Around Your Life with Tiffany Crenshaw

The Secret to a Sustainable Photography Business Isn't Working More

What if the answer to growing your photography business wasn't adding more sessions to your calendar?

What if it was actually working less—but with more intention?

That was the heart of my conversation with photographer and educator Tiffany Crenshaw on this week's episode of The One Behind the Lens.

Tiffany is a family photographer, homeschooling mom of three, educator, and founder of the Realign Retreat. Instead of trying to fit her life around her business, she's intentionally built a business around the season of life she's in.

And honestly?

It's a perspective I think every photographer needs to hear.

Build Your Business Around Your Life

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation was this simple shift:

Stop asking your life to fit your business. Start building your business to fit your life.

Whether you have young children, another career, aging parents, or simply want more evenings at home, your business doesn't have to look like someone else's.

Tiffany shared how she intentionally schedules shooting weeks and admin weeks instead of trying to do everything all at once. She also blocks off the entire month of December so she can enjoy the holidays with her family.

Those boundaries aren't limiting her business—they're making it stronger.

Saying No Doesn't Mean You're Failing

Every photographer has felt it.

An inquiry comes in.

Your calendar is already full.

You know you should say no...

...but you squeeze them in anyway.

Tiffany admitted she's done the same thing, and she shared something that made me laugh because it's so relatable.

She calls it "resentment editing."

You aren't upset with the client.

You're upset because you crossed one of your own boundaries.

That one idea alone is worth listening to the episode.

You Are More Than a Photographer

One thing I loved was Tiffany's reminder that we aren't just photographers.

We're CEOs.

That means making time to review our numbers, evaluate what's working, improve workflows, and actually plan for the future instead of constantly reacting to what's in front of us.

Whether that's a full CEO weekend or simply a few uninterrupted hours at your favorite coffee shop, taking time to work on your business can completely change how you feel about it.

Social Media Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

It's easy to scroll Instagram and assume everyone else is fully booked.

But Tiffany reminded us that social media only shows a tiny piece of someone's business.

A photographer posting every day doesn't necessarily mean they're shooting every day.

Someone may look incredibly successful online while quietly struggling behind the scenes.

That's why comparing your business to someone else's highlight reel is never a fair comparison.

My Favorite Quote

One sentence from Tiffany has been replaying in my head ever since we recorded:

"I'd rather be excellent for five clients than mediocre for thirty-five."

What a powerful reminder that success isn't measured by how busy we are.

It's measured by how intentionally we serve the people we choose to work with.
