Sophie - The Dancer Behind the Portraits

From the tender age of two, dance has been an integral part of her life, shaping her identity and allowing her to express herself in ways words never could. What began as an early fascination with rhythm and movement soon evolved into a lifelong passion. As she grew, so did her dedication and love for dance, leading her to the competitive stage and beyond. In this blog post, she shares her journey—recounting cherished memories, favorite styles, and the moments that have defined her experience as a dancer.

When did you start dancing?

I started dancing a little before I turned two, and I started competitive dance when I was in first grade.

What is your first memory of dancing?

My first memory of dance was learning my first solo, Ordinary Miracle.

What is your favorite style of dance? Why?

My favorite style of dance is contemporary/lyrical because there is so much room for artistry in it. It's my favorite way to tell a story.

If you could dance anywhere in the world, where would it be?

If I could dance anywhere in the world it would be on a tour for a music artist.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

My favorite ice cream flavor is just plain old vanilla.

What is your favorite moment while dancing?

It's hard to pick a favorite moment because I've had so many incredible experiences dancing. My top three would have to be: performing at my first college game day for Iowa State, the last time dancing on stage with my elite team at nationals, and performing at my first NDA college nationals for ISU.

Who is your hero? Why?

My hero is my mom. She is the one I look up to for everything and she is (and always will be) my biggest supporter. I wouldn't be half the person/dancer I am without her.

What is your favorite style of music to dance to?

My favorite type of music to dance to is sad music. It's the easiest way for me to bring out emotion.

What is your favorite style of music while you are relaxing or driving in the car?

My go to car music is anything by Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, and Lorde.

When you think of dancing, how do you feel?

When I think of dancing, it makes me feel so much passion. I am forever grateful that I was able to find something in life that I feel so much emotion for. There aren't enough words to describe what dance has done for me.

While dancing, how do you feel?

When I'm dancing I feel free. Dance is my outlet for everything. It is the only way I know how to let go of things. If I'm feeling stressed, sad, anxious, or all of the above, I turn to dance.

How many hours a week do you practice?

When I was in high school I practiced about 20-25 hours a week. Now that I'm in college it's pretty much whenever or where ever I have time for it.

What is your go to after dance treat?

My go to after dance treat would have to be Chick-fil-a or Orange Leaf.

What was your experience like while having your photoshoot with Kate?

Kate was awesome! I loved being able to share my passion with Kate's passion. Combining the two creates such a beautiful showcase of our talents.

From starting dance just before turning two to performing at national competitions, Sophie’s journey in dance is a testament to passion and dedication. Whether it's the artistry of contemporary/lyrical dance or the emotional depth of sad music, Sophie finds profound ways to express herself through movement. Memorable moments like performing at Iowa State's college game day or the support of her biggest hero—her mom—have defined her experience and shaped who she is today.

Dance isn't just a hobby for Sophie; it's a lifeline, an outlet, and a source of immense joy. From practicing 20-25 hours a week in high school to finding time amidst a busy college schedule, her commitment to dance remains unwavering. And while Chick-fil-a or Orange Leaf might be her go-to treats after a long practice, the real treat is the sense of freedom and release that dancing provides.
