Shutter Up & Celebrate: Behind the Scenes of Our Podcast Launch Party 🎉

Monday, August 11, 2025 | By: Kate DeCoste Photography

On August 4th, we threw more than a party - we launched a dream. The Shutter Up & Celebrate virtual launch for The One Behind the Lens was part hype-fest, part heartfelt gratitude session, and part photographer pep talk. Whether you joined live (and snagged some killer giveaways!) or are tuning in for the replay, this bonus episode is your VIP pass to the energy, stories, and takeaways from the day we officially stepped behind the mic.

From the “walking on sunshine” pre-show playlist to surprise confessions in our Photo Booth segment, here’s what went down — plus the wisdom our guest speakers shared to help you grow your photography business with confidence, storytelling, and heart.

The Heart of the Party

This launch wasn’t just about a podcast. It was about creating a space where photographers, especially those in small towns or building businesses that don’t “fit the mold” can feel seen, heard, and supported.

Kate kicked off with her origin story, from theater stage managing in NYC to photographing seniors and headshots in her hometown of Wahoo, Nebraska. The podcast, she says, is for:

“The woman raising kids and raising her prices. The creative craving clarity, not just content. And the photographer who wants to grow without losing themselves in the process.”

Guest Panel Highlights

Megan Yelaney – Business Coach & Storytelling Expert

Megan brought the fire with her storytelling framework for service-based businesses:

  1. Impact – What changed for you when you solved your own problem?

  2. Mission – Why are you passionate about helping clients with that same problem?

  3. Unique Edge – What makes your approach different?

She stressed that your story isn’t just your “before and after” it’s the micro-moments and shared values that make people trust and choose you.

“Right now, storytelling is selling better than any other type of content out there… It’s literally the only thing that’s going to make you different.” – Megan Yelaney

Quick wins from Megan:

  • Use captions to share why behind your work.

  • Infuse micro-stories into your bio and welcome emails.

  • Audit your portfolio for storytelling consistency.

Ivy Towler – Photographer & Functional Nutrition Practitioner

Ivy flipped the script on “all-or-nothing” wellness. She says ditch the word diet and tune into your own body’s signals instead.

“Every single thing out there will work for some people, but not all people… We’re all built different.” – Ivy Towler

Her go-to ritual when she’s off but still has to show up:

  • Hydration (with minerals/electrolytes)

  • Movement (walk, stairs, dance party)

  • Music

  • Optional boost: small caffeine hit if it’s early in the day

3 Things Kate Wishes She Knew Before Starting Her Photography Business

  1. Being a great photographer isn’t enough. Marketing, connection, and visibility matter just as much.

  2. Charge like a business, not a hobby. Price for sustainability, not comparison.

  3. Mindset matters as much as skill. Boundaries, belief in yourself, and resilience are non-negotiable.

The Photo Confession Booth

Because we all have those “oh no” moments, the Photo Booth segment delivered hilarious and cringe-worthy tales from emailing senior portraits to the wrong state to wardrobe swaps between photographer and client. Alongside the laughs came pro tips (like carrying spare SD cards, nude undergarments, and taking a photo of your client’s name before a session so you never forget it).

Two lucky winners scored prizes valued at $550 and $800, featuring:

  • Taylor Aller’s Inbox Influencer GPT Bot

  • Andrew Helmich's 12-month PhotoBiz Premium Membership
