Here's what I tell every senior before we pick a location: the spot matters less than how you feel standing in it.
That said, Lincoln makes it easy. In one city you've got flower gardens, brick streets, open prairie, a college campus, and one of the most recognizable buildings in the state. Whether you want soft and colorful or bold and a little edgy, there's a place here that fits you.
As a senior photographer here in Lincoln, these are my five favorite spots for senior pictures in Lincoln, Nebraska, what each one does best, and why I keep coming back to them.
1. Sunken Gardens
If you want color, start here. I'm a flower person, so this one is close to my heart.
Sunken Gardens has been part of Lincoln since 1930, and it's the only Nebraska garden on National Geographic's list of the 300 best gardens to visit in the U.S. and Canada. Tulips take over in the spring, and thousands of annuals bloom all summer long. The terraced rock walls, lily ponds, and little benches give us a lot of variety in a small space.
Want even more? The Rotary Strolling Garden and Hamann Rose Garden are right nearby.
Best for: soft, colorful, classic portraits. Dresses, florals, and anything light and airy. Best season: late spring through early fall. What I'll show you: The garden changes every few weeks, so before your session I check what's actually blooming and plan where we'll start. I also know which corners stay calm when the evening crowd rolls in.
2. The Haymarket
Want something with a little more edge? Head downtown.
The Haymarket is all brick buildings, old warehouse doors, alleys, murals, and the restored steam locomotive by the old Burlington depot, built right here in Havelock back in 1901. There's texture everywhere you look, and it gives your Haymarket senior photos a city feel without leaving town.
Best for: urban, modern, and streetwear looks. It's a favorite for guys and for anyone who wants something with a little more attitude. Best season: any time of year. Brick doesn't care if it's April or November. What I'll show you: There's a corner down here most people walk right past, and it's one of my favorite spots in all of Lincoln. You'll see it on session day. The light also changes a lot from block to block, so I plan our route around where it's best that evening.
3. Pioneers Park and the Nature Center
This is my answer for anyone who says, "I want it to feel like Nebraska."
Pioneers Park Nature Center covers 668 acres of tallgrass prairie, woodland, and wetland, with miles of trails, and admission is free. Tall grass at golden hour is hard to beat, and fall out here is gorgeous. The rest of the park adds wide open lawns, big trees, and the stone Pinewood Bowl amphitheater, so you get a totally different look in the same trip.
Best for: natural, relaxed, golden hour portraits. Jeans, sweaters, boots, flowy dresses. Best season: late summer and fall, when the prairie grass is tall and warm toned. What I'll show you: The prairie is huge, and not every part of it photographs the same. I know which stretch catches the evening light first, and it's not the part by the parking lot.
4. University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus
Heading to UNL? Or just bleed Husker red? East Campus gives you that Husker connection with a quieter, greener feel.
It's home to Maxwell Arboretum, 12 acres of trees, perennial gardens, and lilacs, plus wide lawns and classic campus buildings. And yes, the Dairy Store is right there for an ice cream stop after.
Best for: future Huskers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants campus without the crowds. Best season: spring, when the lilacs and gardens bloom, and fall for color. What I'll show you: The arboretum is full of little pockets, and each one gets different light. I plan our route around where it's best that evening, so you just show up.
5. Nebraska State Capitol and Downtown
For something timeless, the Capitol is it.
The limestone, the tall doors, the steps, and the long views down Centennial Mall all read as strong and confident in photos. It's the kind of backdrop that still looks great twenty years from now.
Best for: polished, sophisticated portraits. Dressier outfits, suits, and anyone who wants a few images that could double as a professional headshot later. Best season: all year. What I'll show you: Big architecture can swallow a person in photos if you're not careful. I'll place you so the building frames you instead of competing with you.
How to Choose Your Spot
Most of my seniors end up with two locations, one natural and one urban, so the gallery has variety. Which two, in what order, and at what time depends on your outfits, your schedule, and the light that week. That's the part I plan for you.
These five aren't the only options, either. Your school's field, your favorite coffee shop, your hometown's main street, the place you actually spend your time: those can mean more than any garden ever will. Bring me your ideas.
Here's the thing about any location, though. It's just the backdrop. What makes your photos look like you is how you're directed in it. I'll tell you where to stand, where to look, when to smile, and when not to, so you're never stuck wondering what to do with your hands.
I'll walk you through the whole time, and if you want to try a pose or a spot, just say so.
