Vance's Senior Session | East Butler Senior Photos

Behind every great senior session is a pretty great hype team. 🙌📸

Vance may have been the one in front of the camera, but behind the scenes, Mom and his girlfriend Lucy were making sure every detail was on point — fixing hair, helping with wardrobe, and getting those genuine smiles out of him. Senior sessions are always a team effort, and I love when the people who know a senior best help bring out their personality. That's exactly what happened on this one.

Vance is a senior at East Butler, and from our very first consultation, it was clear this session needed to feel like him. We talked through what he actually wanted, not just what's popular right now, and built the whole evening around that.

We started the evening downtown in Wahoo, meeting in front of Wahoo Bakery to kick things off. Vance wore a black suit — no jacket, keeping it a little more relaxed — and we made our way through downtown using the brick walls, a few alleyways, and an old iron staircase for the backdrop. That staircase holds a little extra meaning for me — it sits right behind a building that was my mom's hair salon back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, so getting to use it for a session always feels special.

From there we headed to a football field, and this is where I really started to see Vance relax. He'd traded the suit for jeans and his jersey, and there's something about a football player back on a football field — even one outside his own hometown — that just makes a person feel more like themselves.

By the time we got out to the lake, he was fully in it. We started in a wooded area so he wouldn't have to squint against the sun — those bright, sunny evenings can be tough on light eyes like his — and worked through a couple of shirt changes as we moved through the shade. We ended the session right at the water's edge, catching the sunset and all those colors bouncing off the lake for some of my favorite images of the night. (The spiders came out on the rocks right about then too, which had all of us a little grossed out and honestly helped us move even faster to get the shot. Ha!)

Vance's mom, Amber, put it best:

"Taking pictures with Kate was fun, relaxed, and such a memorable experience. My son hates taking pictures and by the end he was laughing and giving ideas. The end result were amazing memories and even more amazing senior photos."

This is exactly why I love senior sessions: they're not about a formula. They're about spending an evening with a senior and the people who love them, finding the locations and the moments that actually mean something, and creating photos that feel like proof of who they are right now.

Congratulations, Vance! I had such a great time capturing this chapter with you, Mom, and Lucy along for the ride. Wishing you all the best as you finish out your senior year at East Butler.
